Hydration is Key!

This is my first massage blog ever. So go easy on me ok? 🙂 Today I wanted to start with one of the major foundations of essential muscle health, good ‘ole H20.

Water, in our day in age, is seriously undervalued and underutilized. We like to run to coffee (which I do still love!), soda or other forms of caffeine when what our bodies are probably craving is water!

The daily recommended amount of H20 is half of your body weight in ounces of water. For example, if someone weighs 160lbs they should drink 80oz of water per day! Now that sounds like a lot, but if you think about it, our bodies are made up of 60% water, our brains are about 70%  and our muscles are 75% H20!  It is essentially our life’s blood and utterly necessary for healthy muscles. It actually makes them more elastic and able to heal themselves more efficiently. Also, when you receive a massage your muscles will react more quickly and favorably to the bodywork. Not to mention water helps reduce headaches, increase energy and even helps you be in a better mood!

When I’m in a session utilizing the deep tissue or neuromuscular modality, and my client is well hydrated, the muscle or muscle group that I am engaging will relax more quickly and easily than if they were living on mostly soda. This makes their massage more effective.

So when you’re booking your next massage whether it is a Swedish, prenatal, sports or a neuromuscular session, remember to drink up! Your body will thank you!
